HAVING AN AU PAIR

Au pair is a French term which means "on par" or "equal to" and describes a young person living on an equal basis with a host family in a foreign country.

The au pair will help the family in the home with childcare and housework in return for their own bedroom, meals and a pocket money of a minimum £60.

The au pair is expected to work 25 hours per week. They might be asked to do two evenings babysitting, one of which can be at weekend but not every Saturday. They must have 2 days free per week.

The duties are:

·Looking after the children

·Taking the children to school and/or from the school

·Helping with the light housework,

·Washing up and cleaning

·Helping during dinner times

Au pairs should not be expected to take sole responsibility for the young children or household duties.

The au pair should be treated as a part of the family, as a host family you are expected to make the au pair feel welcomed, by eating together most of the time and joining in some of the family's usual activities.

The cost of language course is the au pair’s responsibility, but it is extremely helpful and advisable to get a list of local language courses, timetables and fees.

Working hours should be arranged to meet your needs and allow the au pair to study and have a social life.
